TYPES OF TURKEY IN NIGERIA
Local turkey: also known as Nigeria Indigenous Turkey (NIT). They are varieties of unclassified breeds except based on the usual feather color. They perform better on free range setting as they can fend for themselves most of their dietary needs.At 16 weeks, the male(Tom) and female (hen) weigh upto 7.5kg and 5.5kg respectively on the average. Egg laying begins at about 8months. They are highly resistant to disease.
Foreign turkey: Nicholas breed is the most common foreign turkey in Nigeria. They grow fast and weigh upto 17-20kg at 5months. It is reared majorly for it's meat. They require proper care especially during brooding because of their fragility and early days sight problems.
Hybrid turkey: The hybrid converter turkey (HCT)is usually a crossbreed of both local and foreign turkey. The best can adapt to varying climatic conditions and management. They have mixed characteristics of both parents.
